$499: Chicago to Dublin

Aer Lingus | Posted at January 11th, 2010

Finding sub-$500 fares to Europe is much more difficult than last year. In early 2009 we frequently saw flights in the $300s and $400s to Europe…even from the West Coast.

When I saw Las Vegas to Barcelona from $219 on June 9th, I knew they couldn’t get any lower. There was just no way. That was the bottom.

And, they definitely have increased since. However, Aer Lingus is currently having a “wee little” sale to remind us of 2009.

Discount rates from Chicago (see below), Boston and New York are available to several European cities, including Dublin, London and Paris for under $500. Travel must be purchased by January 13th for travel between January 18th and February 10th.

Search for your fare on Aer Lingus and remember to check the “Flexible Date” bubble.

$178: Los Angeles to Guadalajara

Volaris | Posted at January 7th, 2010

Mexican low-cost carrier Volaris is offering sub-$200 fares from Los Angeles to Guadalajara through June. This may be in response to Mexicana’s recent fare sale. Whatever the case, now is the time to save money on bookings to Guadalajara.

We just found Los Angeles to Guadalajara for $178 after taxes and fees (see below).

Volaris along with VivaAerobus and Interjet are the leading discount carriers in Mexico, while Mexicana and AeroMexico are the top legacy carriers.

Mexican carriers have been trying to entice international visitors despite the swine flu outbreak in May, the ongoing drug violence and global recession.

With skyrocketing fares to Hawaii, Mexico may be a great money-saving, warm weather alternative for Winter and Spring travel in 2010.

$599: Los Angeles to Rio de Janeiro

Copa Airlines | Posted at December 18th, 2009

Panama City based Copa Airlines is offering $599 fares to Rio de Janeiro from Los Angeles during the end of the southern hemisphere’s high season. There are only several of these fares left for March, but April is pretty much wide open.

We had difficulty on the Copa Airlines site activating the “Promo” prices for both flight legs. We kept getting the error message “Unfortunately system failed to verify your selection this time. Please try again.”

When we select one “Promo” rate and one of the pricier “Plus” fares we don’t get the error. However, on Orbitz there’s no problem (see below).

This Los Angeles to Rio de Janeiro offer isn’t mentioned on Copa Airlines, however see all offers for more cities.

$175: Los Angeles to Vancouver

WestJet | Posted at December 14th, 2009

Canada carrier WestJet is having a fare sale to US and other international destinations. Tickets must be purchased by December 16 for travel on Tue., Wed., Thu. through June 18. More info.

This is great news since flying into and out of Canada usually results in higher taxes on your ticket prices. So, this sale will help offset that.

In addition to Los Angeles to Vancouver for $175 r/t including all taxes (below), other stand-out routes include…

$119: Miami to Toronto
$229: Los Angeles to Toronto
$259: Vancouver to Cancun
$159: Las Vegas to Montreal
$299: Edmonton to Cancun

$631: Los Angeles to Phnom Penh

China Airlines | Posted at December 1st, 2009

If you are flexible with your travel, you can find fares to many Asian cities from Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle in the $600’s for travel this winter.

Cities we continually see in the $600’s include Tokyo, Taiwan, Bangkok, Beijing, Hong Kong, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh and Manila. Historically, the routes were priced near or above the $1,000 plateau.

Case in point (below) is Los Angeles to Phnom Penh for $632 in March/April with China Airlines. We found this on Orbitz. It was significantly higher on the China Airlines website.

$239: New York to Los Angeles

Virgin America | Posted at November 30th, 2009

One reason we like this latest Virgin America sale is because the travel window is so big (12/3/09 – 5/23/09) with only eight blackout dates (12/18, 12/19, 12/26, 12/27, 1/1, 1/3, 2/12, 2/15).

As you see, not all of the dates in and around Christmas and New Years are completely blacked out, so holiday travelers can take advantage. This is a rare occurrence as airlines usually black out all of the dates in late December.

Also, this Cyber Monday Sale doesn’t end until December 8th, so you have ample time to make your purchase.

Virgin America charges $20 for each checked bag, but Wi-Fi is free on all flights until 1/15 to provide consolation.

One-way (before taxes)
$39*: San Francisco to Las Vegas
$39*: San Francisco to Las Angeles
$39*: San Francisco to Orange County
$39*: San Diego to San Francisco
$99*: Los Angeles to Fort Lauderdale
$59*: Seattle to Los Angeles
$99*: Los Angeles to Washington D.C.
$69*: Los Angeles to Boston

We found this on VirginAmerica.com for Valentine’s Day travel…
