$244: JFK to Caribbean Cities

JetBlue | Posted at October 14th, 2009

Not only is JetBlue digging deeper into the Caribbean by adding more and more destinations, but they have a headlock on low fares to the region, especially for direct flights from New York (JFK). These are ridiculously popular routes given the number of Caribbean expatriates who live in the New York area.

JetBlue currently flies to 13 Caribbean cities…

  1. Cancun, Mexico
  2. San Juan, Puerto Rico
  3. Ponce, Puerto Rico
  4. Aguadilla, Puerto Rico
  5. Nassau, Bahamas
  6. Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic
  7. Santiago, Dominican Republic
  8. Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic
  9. Montego Bay, Jamaica
  10. St. Maarten
  11. Hamilton, Bermuda
  12. Barbados
  13. Aruba

JetBlue will be adding New York to St. Lucia on October 26 and Kingston, Jamaica on October 30. Once the U.S. opens up business with Cuba, look for them to flood that island with flights. They now serve 17 international locations. Will Southwest Airlines ever step to the international plate?

When is JetBlue going to tackle the Virgin Islands, already?

25 Cent Rooms in the U.S. Virgin Islands

U.S. Virgin Islands | Posted at October 13th, 2009

In celebration of the newly minted U.S.V.I. quarter, and to drum up tourism during the islands’ wettest months (and the last months of hurricane season), hotel rooms will cost merely 25 cents. This promotion will be good at nine different hotels on St. Thomas and St. Croix.

We had the opportunity to stay and attend a wedding at one of these hotels, Carambola Resort, and had a splendid time. It’s located right on the white sandy beach in a remote section of the island. We paid about $300/night back in October 2003, so the thought of 25 cents gives me goose bumps.

Watch out for crabs crossing the street, they’re the most popular road kill in St. Croix! Read more…

Barcelona: Chocolate in the Morning

Barcelona | Posted at October 11th, 2009

It’s a normal weekday here in Barcelona.  I walk the morning streets with a massive appetite for potatoes and eggs, but all I see is caffeine, nicotine and chocolate (“xocolata” in Catalan).  And, the sandwiches they call bocadillios. Since the bread is so fresh here, you can’t wrong.  So, my day starts with another bocadillo, pastry and cappuccino.

I learn later that a common breakfast here is some form of chocolate, washed down by a caffeinated beverage and topped off by cigarettes.

I see a teenager walking her leash-less dog with a pastry in one hand and burning heater in the other.  She takes a drag, a bite and then another drag.  If that’s her breakfast, then what’s the dog getting in his bowl? Oops, there it is.  Her dog makes a dropping and she doesn’t stop to clean it up.  Most dog owners don’t in l’Eixample.

45 minutes after my massive sugar and caffeine high I feel completely wiped out.

The heartiest and most nutritious meal of the day in Barcelona is not breakfast.

$593: Seattle to Vietnam

Asiana Airlines | Posted at October 7th, 2009

We’re continuing to see great deals from Seattle (SEA) to various Asian cities including Japan, The Philippines and, in this case, Vietnam.

For those who are unfamiliar with the vacation potential of Vietnam, it has the “Tourist Trifecta”. It’s cheap, safe and warm. The US Dollar, Euro and British Pound will go miles here, literally. Many visitors hire drivers to chauffeur them around the country for a mere $15 per day.

Take advantage of these good deals before the industry rebounds, and prices inch back up. They are already showing signs of this.
