This city by the sea has previously been ruled by other nations, including China. Now firmly a part of Russia, it’s got a strong naval and maritime history – reflected in the attractions you’ll find here – and the main industries include shipping and fishing. Vladivostok has a good selection of museums, so if you’re up for a spot of learning, there’s a lot on offer.

Museum highlights include the Vladivostok Fortress Museum, which allows you to explore the underground marine fortress, the Memorial Submarine S-56 Museum, which is dedicated to the history of the famous Soviet Pacific Fleet submarine, used during World War II, and the Vladivostok Oceanarium, which is an aquarium museum.

There’s also a picture gallery dedicated to children’s pictures, which is a bit unusual. To explore the surrounding cities, take a trip on the Trans-Siberian Railway – it runs from Vladivostok and Moscow, with plenty of stops at interesting places en route.
