Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is one of the African cities that still retain a good portion of the old and traditional ways, whilst attempting to embrace the modern. In no way is it yet cosmopolitan, but it is eclectic and a popular tourist destination.

The medina in the centre of the city, with its numerous old buildings, including palaces, mausoleums and mosques, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The souks are a particular attraction and are a magnet for bargain hunters. Whilst they used to be located in a small area of the medina, they’ve now multiplied and can be found all over the city.
