By Rachel Newcombe: Beautiful islands, pure blue seas, buzzing cities and culture galore – Thailand has it all. Located in Southeast Asia, the country covers about 510,000 square kilometres and is home to about 57 million people. Thailand boasts a tropical climate, with the average temperature during the year hitting 28C, and there is plenty of sunshine available from June to September.
The capital, Bangkok, is in central Thailand and divided into two halves by the Chao Phya River. It was once dubbed ‘Venice of the East’ because of the numerous canals that carved through the city. However, many of them have disappeared in recent years due to new developments throughout the city. Despite the recent modernizing and westernizing of Bangkok, it still clings to a multitude of eastern characteristics. Seeing this while travelling around on the Sky Train is very popular and easy for tourists. But, for a more traditional ride, try the three-wheeled Tuk Tuk Taxis!
If you’re in search of nice beaches, there are many beautiful areas around the coast, including stunning islands. Phuket, the biggest island, boasts wonderful coastlines with tropical vegetation. Also, Phuket has been substantially restored since the Tsunami of 2005. Koh Samui has famous rocks and gushing waterfalls. Maya Bay, off Phi Phi, is where the film, The Beach, was shot.
Over 90% of Thailand’s population is Buddhist, so the country has many memorable temples to visit. Thailand also makes its mark through its cuisine. Whether you purchase food from roadside stalls or in expensive restaurants, there are numerous mouth-watering tastes and flavours to try. Don’t forget to try a curry, or two. If you’re feeling brave, try some Durian! Go!
