The largest and highest of the Canaries, Tenerife is a volcanic island in the Atlantic Ocean. Its volcanic history has created a unique lunar landscape, with steep slopes in many parts and an unusual assortment of rock emanating many colours of the rainbow, including green, orange, red and many shades between.

The best view of the landscape is gained from taking a cable car ride up Mount Teide, the highest mountain in Spain. Tenerife benefits from great year round weather, so it’s no wonder that the beaches are a big draw with sunbathers, swimmers and surfers. Although some of the beaches do have the traditionally favoured golden sand (like Teresitas, on the northern coast), others are characterised by black, volcanic sand (like Playa de El Puertito). In the sea itself, dolphins and whales are often sighted; for a chance of seeing them, take a boat trip around the bay.
