Sydney Airfares
Sydney
By Carolyn Batt: There is no better way to experience the beauty of Sydney’s harbor than to scale the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Climbers weave their way through catwalks and up ladders to eventually reach the summit of the bridge, taking in a 360 degree view of the city. The Opera House and city skyscrapers lie in the foreground, ferries criss-cross the waters below, and the Heads and the Blue Mountains can be seen in the distance. Tour leaders, who take 12 climbers in a group, impart local knowledge and bridge history along the way.
Sydney Harbour Bridge, which stands 134m above the water, was constructed in 1932, and although there is a lookout point in the south-east pylon of the bridge, public climbs of the arch did not commence until 1998. Since then, demand has soared, and around 700 people now conquer the bridge each day.
Tours are available from dawn to dusk, each offering a different atmosphere - the vivid blue harbor by daytime contrasting with the serenity of city lights at night. Climbs are possible every day of the year except 30 and 31 December, but due to popularity, advance booking is recommended. Participants must be over 10 years old, and pass an alcohol breath-test.
The climbing fee starts from $165 for adults, so the experience is not a cheap one. But, as one climber said, “It’s a fantastic feeling when I see the bridge on TV and point out to absolutely everyone: ‘I’ve climbed that!’”.
