Switzerland Overview

By iCheapAirfares Staff

This central European country of 7 million is topographically dominated by the Alps Mountains in the south and east. A flat plateau runs through the center of the country and is where Zurich, Bern and Geneva are located.

Culturally diverse and deep rooted, German is the main language of Switzerland and French and Italian are secondary. Switzerland is unique from it neighbors in that it has avoided many of the major conflicts and wars throughout the last several hundred years. The Switzerland of today is a well-oiled machine - it’s highly industrialized, innovative and one of the richest countries in the world.

The capital city of Bern, in the east, is one of the most beautiful, historic towns in Switzerland. Split by the River Aare, some of the riverside houses and shops have almost a Venetian feel them. Automobiles aren’t allowed in the medieval, Old Town section which adds to the quaintness and purity of the area. Bern has such a charming, small town feel that it’s easy to forget that it’s the capital of Switzerland – an not Geneva or Zurich.

Once known as one of the cleanest and quietest big cities in Europe, Zurich is slowly loosening up and providing a more exciting nightlife, art and café scene. Expense can be an issue in the German-speaking Zurich, but if you pick and choose your spending wisely, you should come out ok. I you’re running low on cash, Zurich also has a celebrated, medieval Old Town area – and it’s free to roam.

The French-speaking city of Geneva, where the European headquarters of the UN is located, is in southwest Switzerland. Geneva was shaped in part by religious reformer John Calvin who was behind the creation of Protestantism. Go!
