Located between Norway and Finland in Scandinavia, Sweden is a large, sparsely populated country extending for almost 1,000 miles from north to south.

Probably the best time to visit Sweden is during the light-filled summer months. The north of Sweden is known as the Land of the Midnight Sun and, in the area above the Arctic Circle, the sun never sets from the end of May until the middle of July.

Sweden’s major cities are Stockholm, the capital; the west coast port of Gothenburg (Göteborg); and the southern city of Malmö, a pleasant amalgamation of traffic-free streets and squares decorated with modern sculptures.

Lapland, the northernmost province of Sweden, is easily accessible by road and rail. Just over the Arctic Circle is the town of Jokkmokk, where you can eat delicacies made from reindeer meat and browse goods hand-crafted from reindeer horn, root fibers and other natural materials.

The incredible ice hotel at Jukkasjärvi is the world’s largest igloo. Those brave enough to spend the night in an ice bed with only a sleeping bag and a reindeer skin mattress to protect them from the cold earn a certificate of survival in the morning. To warm up, you can sip vodka at the hotel bar or take part in skiing, snowmobiling or dog sledging nearby.
