St. Petersburg Overview

St. Petersburg, in the north-west of Russia, is the country’s second largest city and an important cultural center.

Peter the Great established the city in 1703 and built the Baroque Winter Palace, the residence of the Tsars of Russia until the Russian Revolution of 1917. The Winter Palace now forms part of The Hermitage, one of the world’s largest museums with almost three million exhibits, ranging from pre-historic arrow heads to modern abstract paintings.

The Bronze Horseman statue commemorates Peter the Great. It sits on top of a huge piece of stone known as the Thunder Stone, which is reputedly the heaviest stone ever moved by men alone. Go!
