St. Tropez, now a fashionable resort in the South of France, was a small fishing village until it was popularized by celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot in the late 1950s and 1960s. Celebrities can still be seen on its beaches and in its chic restaurants and nightclubs.

St. Tropez is famous for its golden sandy beaches, although many of them are occupied by beach clubs offering amenities at expensive prices. As an alternative to celebrity spotting on the fashionable Pampelonne beach, walk along the coastline from beach to beach and enjoy beautiful panoramic views on the way.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, St. Tropez became the haunt of artists such as Paul Signac, Henri Matisse and Pierre Bonnard, whose works now hang in the Musée de l’Annonciade museum.

Each year, between May 16 and 18, the town commemorates St. Tropez, a Roman soldier who became a Christian martyr, during the Bravade religious and military festival. Several processions headed by an effigy of St. Tropez wind through the town, accompanied by cannon fire and traditional music.

Inhale the regional fragrances of Provence at La Place des Lices market on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Tempt your taste buds with local food such as olives, garlic, and goat’s cheese, and take home some hand-made pottery, lavender sachets, or soap made from olive oil and honey.
