Spirit Airlines bills itself as an “ultra low cost carrier” with the aim of liberating passengers from high fares that include services they don't want or need. Spirit combines operating efficiencies, leading edge technology and new Airbus aircraft (low maintenance) to offer low fare options to passengers who need few amenities. Buyer beware, however—that means you'll pay for each additional service, including checked luggage, advance seat selection, and on board beverages and snacks. And don't expect roomy seats or entertainment. Spirit does offer a limited number of “Big Front Seats” on each flight to provide an additional six inches of width and six inches of legroom to those who need it. A dedicated website and reservation line in Spanish makes it user-friendly to international travelers. Hurricane Buster fares waive the change fee and fare difference for reservation changes due known hurricanes.

Rather than a typical mileage plan, Spirit's $9 Fare Club members get at least $9 off every flight (enough to pay for checking bags) and access to Fare Club specials, sometimes in the single digits.
