Spain Overview

By iCheapAirfares Staff

Barcelona, located in northeast Spain on the Mediterranean Sea, is a high-energy, buzzing city with a vivacious nightlife that stays up until the sun comes up. The social culture of Barcelona is so built around the night hours, that it isn’t uncommon to meet your party for dinner at 11 pm. The city essentially never sleeps. During the daytime, use the excellent Metro system to visit the The Boqueria, La Rambla and the Picasso Museum. The skyscraping Temple de la Sagrado Familia will knock your socks off. Read up on Catalonian culture before visiting, most Barcelonans don’t identify as Spanish.

Southwest of Barcelona, in central Spain, is the capital city of Madrid. During the daytime we loved wandering through the great museums. The Prado is free on Sundays so that was an added benefit. At night, the plazas were enchanting. Times Square in New York City has nothing on Puerta del Sol and Plaza Major in terms of crowds and energy. The nightlife in Spain, especially in the larger cities, is nonstop. We only lasted until 2 am, but the streets were as crowded and animated as any other hour. The nice thing is that it felt very comfortable and safe, even late at night.

Additional must visit towns in Spain are Seville, Toledo and Granada in southern Spain, and Valencia on the east coast. Portugal is nearby to the west as are short boat rides to Tangiers, Morocco embarking from Algeciras (near the Rock of Gibraltar). Go!

Head to luxurious Marbella, Malaga for some fun!
My visit to Spain included a stop in the city of Malaga, and a long stay in Marbella. You must stay at least one or two nights to get a real ‘feel’ for the area. Marbella is considered one of the most luxurious cities on the Mediterranean coast, and the town is full of wealthy famous people. Marbella can come across as ‘vain’ with all of its bling bling, luxury cars, and money flow, but there is more than meets the eye. Take a visit to Old Town where you can enjoy the parks and gardens, and get away from the chaotic downtown tourist area. I spent a lot of time at Puerto Banus Beach where you can people watch while lying on golden fine sand. I am heading back in June for the San Bernabe Fair to see the bullfights, and some famous Spanish singers perform. It is definitely worth a visit to Marbella!

Paella Time!
My trip to Spain included a variety of experiences. From a tiny beach town on the border of France that felt untouched by modern civilization, to the bigger cities filled with the buzz of activity, the feeling of liveliness of spirit was present throughout the country. For me, everything about Spain equals passion. After relaxing by the beach for a day or so, I decided to stay for a few days in Madrid. I fell in love with the Prado, rowed on the lake at El Retiro Park, and joined the locals for music, gazpacho, and dancing. On one of my foot journeys, I followed my nose to a little paella restaurant along a narrow alley. I ordered seafood paella with a hint of saffron, prepared by an "authentic" Spanish chef. Had I died and gone to Heaven? Well, maybe not exactly, but what a way to go!
