South Africa

By iCheapAirfares Staff: South Africa is a country so diverse that it has 11 official languages (English, Afrikaans and nine Bantu dialects). Afrikaans is a blend of English and Dutch while the Bantu tongues are indigenous languages. In addition to Dutch and native influences, the cultures of India, Madagascar and Indonesia are apparent today due to citizens from these countries being brought over in the 17th century as slaves. South Africa was a British colony until its independence in 1910.

South Africa is one the richest countries in terms of natural resources with a large chunk of the world’s diamonds and gold found here. Many fascinating, large-sized animals are also found here in its wildlife parks and out in the wilderness, including lions, rhinoceroses, zebras, hippopotamuses, giraffes, buffalos, leopards and elephants. Cape Agulhas is the southernmost point of the country, and the continent of Africa for that matter, and is where the Atlantic and Indian Ocean’s meet.

Cape Town, South Africa’s biggest tourist destination, is a coastal city located on the Atlantic Ocean side. It is surprisingly modern and cosmopolitan with captivating museums, great shopping (Greenmarket Square) and nightlife amongst historic, European influenced buildings. The District Six Museum portrays the ethnic relocation and housing destruction that switched off a once glowing community. Long Street is a 300-year-old strip that cuts through the city and features great furniture stores, restaurants and clubs. Simon’s Beach, which is 25 miles south of Cape Town, is a Victorian, beachfront town in which colonies of penguins frequent. See South Africa travel deals!
