Once a fishing village, and then a trading post under British rule, Singapore gained it’s independence in 1965, and has subsequently prospered (thanks also to a lucrative free trade policy).
Located in Southeast Asia on the southern edge of the Malaysian Peninsula, Singapore draws cultural influence from Chinese, Malay and Indian traditions. English is freely spoken in this country of 4 million by most of the younger generation, while the older locals lean towards Malay, Chinese or Tamil.
Whenever I travel, I try to stay away from homogeneous, consumer traps and immerse myself in the cultural and unique, but in Singapore I was pleased by Orchard Road.
