Siena draws thousands of tourists each year for the spectacular “Palio” horse race, held on July 2 and August 16, which takes place in the town’s main square. The bareback contest is hotly fought between Siena’s seventeen “contrade” (districts), with passions running high. Although the races last a matter of minutes, the festivities preceding and following the race ensure an eventful summer each year.

Siena is a beautiful destination at any time, however. The sloping Piazza del Campo, when not turned over to horse-racing, is an ideal spot to sit and appreciate the elegant Gothic city hall, the Palazzo Publico, which stands at the lower edge. From the top of the Palazzo, climbers are rewarded with a view to the surrounding Tuscan countryside.

The black and white marble Duomo is a short stroll away, through winding shop-lined streets. Many of the shops sell leather goods and Pan Forte, a sweet Sienese specialty of densely-packed almonds, candied peel and spices. Gelaterias also do a roaring trade, especially on hot days.

Carparks on the outskirts of Siena, with escalators connecting to the historic centre, make this an easy town to visit as a day trip if you have instead chosen to indulge in a Tuscan villa in the nearby countryside.
