The island of Sicily is located off the southern coast of Italy. It’s had a long history and been dominated by various other nations en route, so has an interesting historical and cultural past to explore. Amongst the highlights, you’ll find archaeological sites, mountains, beaches and islands.

Catania is perhaps best known for its volcano, Mount Etna, which erupted and tragically killed thousands of people in the 17th century. Now a thriving city, its boasts Baroque architecture, a Norman cathedral and ruins of a Roman amphitheatre. The city of Palermo was bombed during WWII, but it’s evolved to become a modern city and the capital of Sicily.

The country is easy to explore via various forms of transport, such as trains and buses. Despite its close proximity to Italy, the primary language is Sicilian; some language skills will be handy – English isn’t always understood, so good back-ups are Italian and French.
