South of Beijing on the Huangpu Jiang River, densely populated Shanghai is China’s largest city and its center of financial and commercial activity.

Known as the Paris of the East in colonial times, Shanghai is now a modern city filled with skyscrapers. However, some colonial architecture remains, most notably along the Bund.

Wander around the People’s Square (Renmin Guangchang) and visit Shanghai Museum, whose many exhibits include calligraphy, jade and furniture dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Jade Buddha Temple (Yufo Si) houses two large white jade statues of the Seated Buddha and the Sleeping Buddha.
