The capital of Korea, Seoul is surrounded by mountains, which offer a dramatic backdrop to a busy city. The old and the new exist alongside each other in Seoul, offering visitors a chance to explore the history and culture, as well as enjoy the modern shopping centres and restaurants.

The Myeongdong Cathedral was the first Gothic building to be built in Korea. Work first begun on it in 1894 and it took four years to complete. Built of brick rather than stone, it features bricks of red and grey colouring and is built in the shape of a cross. Admission to the cathedral is free, so it’s worth having a good explore if you get the chance.

For an insight into live during the Chosun Dynasty, take a trip to the Namsangol Traditional Folk Village, in P’il-dong. Five traditional houses have been restored and decorated with period furnishings and the surrounding gardens have been recreated too.
