By Pam Bruno: One of the largest cities in South America, population 4.5 million, Santiago is known for its constant layer of smog. However, the public transportation systems are being improved, to the extent that the Santiago subway system has been called one of the safest and most efficient subways in the world. Some highlights of visiting Santiago include a trip to La Chascona, the home of Pablo Neruda, Chile’s winner of the Nobel Prize for Poetry. Another must-see is the San Cristobal Hill, with its view of the Chilean Andes mountains, especially when the air is clear. The statue of the Virgin Mary, sculpted in part by French artist Frederic Bartholdi, the creator of the Statue of Liberty, is awe-inspiring simply because it can be seen from many locations in the city. The easiest way to get to this site is to take the funicular, and the view on the way up is spectacular. There are restaurants and shops along the way, plus a zoo, a Japanese garden, and a botanical garden. Go! |
