Badly bombed in World War Two, Rotterdam was rebuilt and transformed into a modern city.

Old elements remain, for example in the shape of the Old Harbour, but there’s a lot of modern architecture to enjoy. One bizarre element is the cube houses built by Piet Bloom in the 1980s; the show home is open to visitors.

The Maritime Museum depicts the history of this ancient port and home of ship building. A short train journey takes you to the village of Kinderdijk, home to 19 windmills that have become some of the most famous in the Netherlands.
