Queenstown Overview By Roz Andrews  Known as the adventure capital of New Zealand, Queenstown is a small town in a beautiful setting on the shore of Lake Wakatipu, bordered by the Remarkables mountain range.
The natural features of the area provide the backdrop for a variety of exhilarating activities, including jet boating, white water rafting, bungee jumping, paragliding, skiing (in the winter), and mountaineering.
Take the Skyline Gondola cable car up to Bob’s Peak for spectacular views of the mountains, lake and town. If you are feeling adventurous, you can ride back down on the luge, a type of toboggan.
A boat trip on Lake Wakatipu is a more relaxing way of enjoying the scenery. The historic paddle steamer, TSS Earnslaw, launched in 1912, is still in operation, offering daytime excursions and evening dinner cruises during the summer.
At Underwater World, you can see native fish, such as long-finned eels and trout, in their natural habitat from a viewing lounge sixteen feet below the lake’s surface.
Visit the nocturnal Kiwi House at The Kiwi and Birdlife Park to see the endangered, flightless kiwi and other native birds including parakeets, keas and owls.
The peaceful Queenstown Gardens with fragrant roses and fir trees are a perfect antidote to the excitement of the town’s adventure activities. Go!
