Qatar does not top well-known travel destination lists. Most travelers aren’t really sure what to call the small Arab emirate. (Sources agree pronunciation is somewhere around “cutter,” not “KA-tar.”) It is a sun-splashed land bordered by Saudi Arabia and surrounded on three sides by the sparkling Persian Gulf.

A desert safari is an essential Qatar experience. Exciting jeep tours sweep over wind-swept sand dunes to Khor Al Daid, a huge inland sea. Doha offers fine museums like Qatar National Museum and Ethnographic Museum. Al-Khor Mosque showcases panoramic views of the Persian Gulf.

Take in a camel race at Al-Shahhainiya. And, shopping the souqs (markets) is always favorite pastime. Compared to other Arab states, Qatar is somewhat more liberal. Violence against tourists is rare; however, security is tight.

The U.S. State Department recommends that travelers to Qatar exercise caution. Authorities also strictly enforce bans on bringing alcohol, narcotics and anything deemed pornographic into the country.
