The Portuguese Republic is the westernmost country in Europe. Angra do Heroismo, originally called the “universal port of call in the Western Sea”, was a central location for shipping to and from North and South America, and Asian and African countries.

It became a beautiful location for majestic architecture spanning 500 years, in churches, convents, and palaces throughout the town. Sintra is the home of one of the most diverse structures in the area, an old monastery rebuilt into a castle, using influences from Gothic, Moorish, Egyptian, and Renaissance architecture with surrounding sculptured gardens.

A trip to Lisbon will probably begin and end at the Gare de Oriente, the main transportation hub in the city. Tourists love seeing the seven hills from the tram ride, and walking through the central city, or Baixa, an elegant section in the heart of Lisbon, famous for its earthquake-resistant buildings, plus the Castle of Sao Jorge, and the Lisbon Cathedral located on one of the seven hills.
