By Lynne Christen: Poland, Polska in Polish, has endured its share of hardships throughout history to emerge as a stable democratic nation and popular travel destination. It is a land of contrasts and deeply rooted traditions. Steeped in folklore, visits to some parts of Poland are like stepping into a fairytale complete with a slew of castles and palaces. Malbork Castle is the largest surviving medieval castle in Europe. At the same, time Poland’s modern cities are thriving business and cultural centers. Warsaw, Poland’s capital city, suffered massive destruction during WWII and rebuilding resulted in a “new” Warsaw with a predominantly contemporary landscape. Spared war damage, Kraków is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with countless historical monuments and not-to-be-missed, Rynek Glowny, Europe’s largest authentic medieval marketplace. Classical music lovers pay homage to Frederic Chopin in his birthplace, Zelazowa Wola, a tiny village nearby Warsaw. Visit on a Sunday to enjoy virtuoso performances in the same parlor where he created some of his major works. And before leaving, raise a toast with Polish wódka connoisseurs claim it ranks among top vodkas of the world. Go! |
