Philippines

By iCheapAirfares Staff: The Philippines, a group of islands, is located in Southeast Asia. On the island of Mindanao rests a delightfully beautiful inland sea, otherwise known as Lake Sebu. Tucked into the southern regions of the Tiruray Highlands, the lake offers a bit of diversion for visitors while being in the midst of seclusion.

The native people of Tiruray, the T'boli, maintain their traditional lifestyle and customs. Saturdays are a perfect opportunity to explore heir native crafts of weaving and brassware at their colorful and bustling marketplace.

The Hundred Islands National Park offers the opportunity of having a quiet secluded beach all to yourself. Although many can only be considered very large rocks, there are actually 123 islets in this area. The waters there are extremely clear as well as shallow. Often regarded as one of the best beaches in the world, the beach of Boracay Island is an oasis of white sand that welcomes visitors and residents alike.

In north Luzon, an awesome display of rice terraces rests in quiet splendor. The people of the Ifugao tribes carved the rice paddies into the landscape over two thousand years ago. They rise like a staircase of nature up to the skies in glory.

Yes, Ma’am!
I traveled to the Philippines after I had been in India for a while. India was much more British, and to everyone there, I was “Madame”, as in “Here is your tea, Madame,” while the atmosphere in the Philippines was much more American. There I was “Ma’am”, as in “Yes, Ma’am”, just like in the States. So, for that reason alone, I felt very at home. I spent much of my time trying (with no luck) to track down a family in Manila who had welcomed my uncle into their home after World War II. I love the tropical climate of the Philippines. It was here that I first drank coconut milk from a new green coconut. I also heard about a practice called ‘faith healing’ that occurs throughout the country. I saw busloads of tourists who had come from surrounding countries to be rescued from their maladies, including cancer. Whether it works or not, I will leave it up to those who claim they are cured to enter into the debate.

Let go!
Get away from the malls and the city. Go to the country and savor the different islands, especially the Visayan Islands- Negros, Panay, Cebu and Bohol, a few of the thousand islands that make up the Philippines. Visit the coastal areas, enjoy the fresh seafood, fruits and vegetables. The people are genuinely friendly and helpful in ways that westerners are not used to. Favorites places: Mambucal Hot Springs in Negros Occidental, and white beaches in Cebu and Bohol and hot springs in Asin, next to Baguio.
