Yes, Ma’am!
I traveled to the Philippines after I had been in India for a while. India was much more British, and to everyone there, I was “Madame”, as in “Here is your tea, Madame,” while the atmosphere in the Philippines was much more American. There I was “Ma’am”, as in “Yes, Ma’am”, just like in the States. So, for that reason alone, I felt very at home. I spent much of my time trying (with no luck) to track down a family in Manila who had welcomed my uncle into their home after World War II. I love the tropical climate of the Philippines. It was here that I first drank coconut milk from a new green coconut. I also heard about a practice called ‘faith healing’ that occurs throughout the country. I saw busloads of tourists who had come from surrounding countries to be rescued from their maladies, including cancer. Whether it works or not, I will leave it up to those who claim they are cured to enter into the debate.

Let go!
Get away from the malls and the city. Go to the country and savor
the different islands, especially the Visayan Islands- Negros, Panay,
Cebu and Bohol, a few of the thousand islands that make up the
Philippines. Visit the coastal areas, enjoy the fresh seafood, fruits
and vegetables. The people are genuinely friendly and helpful in
ways that westerners are not used to. Favorites places: Mambucal
Hot Springs in Negros Occidental, and white beaches in Cebu and
Bohol and hot springs in Asin, next to Baguio.
