The Republic of Peru is in South America, bordered by Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile and the Pacific Ocean. Once home to the Inca civilisation, it still bears striking memories of this time. The Andes Mountains run through Peru and the geography consists of coast, jungle and highlands.

The subtropical capital, Lima, has become a metropolitan hub; in between visiting museums, you can surf on the beach and sample its seafood specialities. It’s a good starting point for a tour of the rest of the country.

The ancient archaeological site, Machu Picchu, is a major pull for tourists and won’t disappoint. The Inca ruins were found in 1911, located 2,000 feet above the Urubamba river, and are one of the most impressive and intriguing relics of their type, with palaces and temples galore. During the peak season, from May until September, Machu Picchu is very busy.
