Many tourists go there for birdwatching, as well as swimming at the beaches, snorkeling, and hiking. Of course, the 5-hour tour of the canal is one of the most popular attractions in Panama. The canal is 49 miles long and extends from Panama City on the Pacific Ocean to Colón on the Atlantic Ocean. Panama City, itself, is one of the most cosmopolitan capital cities of Central America. The old ruins of Spanish buildings in the Casco Viejo, on the west side of Panama City, amid skyscrapers and shops, create and interesting contrast of past and present.
