By Rachel Newcombe: Pakistan is situated in the heart of South Asia, bordering India on the east, Afghanistan on the northwest, China on the north, Iran on the west and the Arabian Sea on the south. It’s a country full of contrasts – magnificent high peaks (some of the highest in the world), long flat plains, desert areas and striking coniferous forests.

The capital, Islamabad, sits beneath the Margalla Hills at the northern edge of Potohar Plateau and is a modern city, with many buildings constructed in the 1960s. Two popular resorts are Patriata and Abbottabad, the latter of which is situated in a lush green valley. The shops and markets in most areas of the country are a great place to pick up traditional handicrafts, such as ceramics, textiles or items made of brass. Many people visit Pakistan to learn more about its cultural and archaeological history – and there are certainly plenty of opportunities - plus it’s a popular place for adventure sports enthusiasts.

Soince it’s a Muslim country, getting your dress code right is advisable. Women are expected to dress modestly, so lightweight cotton clothing is ideal. In public, the locals – both men and women – generally wear casual shalwar suits.

Food in Pakistan is an experience on its own! Authentic Pakistani dishes can be found in most restaurants and include spicy dishes such as Tikka, Saiji and Seekh-Kabab, often served with Pullao, an oriental rice dish.
