The city of Oaxaca is the capital and largest city of the state of Oaxaca. Start your explorations in the zocalo, or central square, where there are often street entertainers in action or people trying to sell handmade crafts, plus lots of cafes. If you’re visiting near Christmas, then you must experience the Noche de Rabanos, or Night of the Radishes, on December 23rd. This unusual cultural celebration, held in the zocalo, involves specially grown large radishes that are carved and made into figures, such as saints, religious icons and other key characters from history. Radish art has been an annual feature since at least 1897 and the festival awards prizes for the best characters and scenes.
