North America Overview

By Lynne Christen
Geographic lines often blur. In some parts of the world, the geoscheme of North America refers exclusively to the United States and Canada while in others Mexico, Greenland, St. Pierre, Miquelon and Bermuda are included in the North America region. In Canada, wild arctic frontiers to the north share the land with cosmopolitan cities to the south and British, French, First Nation and Pacific Rim influences are apparent in major Canadian cities like Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver. The United States takes pride in its diversity from the center of democracy in Washington DC to favorite cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, Seattle, Dallas/FortWorth, Miami, Atlanta and Charleston. From sunny beaches to ski resorts and the grandeur of the Grand Canyon to glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Las Vegas and Broadway, the U.S. offers eclectic experiences for all tastes and budgets. And in Mexico, south-of-the-border sizzle, Mayan and Aztec heritage, jet-setter resorts of Riviera Mayan and Baja Peninsula, colonial mission towns and the megalopolis of Mexico City round out the North American travel picture.
