Nice is a sophisticated, French resort town on the azure coastline (la côte d’azur) bordering the vivid blue Mediterranean Sea.

Enjoy relaxing views of the calm sea bathed in sunshine from the Promenade des Anglais. The beach itself is quite stony and perhaps more suited to strolling than bathing, although there are many who go for a dip, even during the winter.

The ideal destination for a winter break, Nice has average January temperatures of 55 degrees Fahrenheit and five hours of sunshine per day. Hotel rooms are more reasonably priced during the winter months.

Visit in February and admire the spectacular Nice Carnival. Processions, flower parades, concerts and outdoor entertainment last for over two weeks and culminate in a fireworks display on Shrove Tuesday.

On the hills above the town, the Cimiez district is home to a Franciscan monastery with a sixteenth century cloister and the ruins of Cemenelum, a Roman settlement with paved streets, public baths and an amphitheatre. Glass, ceramics, jewelry, coins and other objects excavated from the ruins are exhibited at the nearby archaeological museum.

For a wonderful view of Nice and the Bay of Angels (la Baie des Anges), go up to the castle park (le parc du château), where you can enjoy a tranquil waterfall and explore the remains of the sixth century cathedral.
