Montreal Overview By Rachel Newcombe The vibrant city of Montreal is the second largest in Canada, with a population of about 3.4 million people. The city is actually located on an island and connected to the mainland by a multitude of bridges.
The city was once divided between the French and English and signs of this are still evident today. Today, additional cultures influence the city as well, with mini communities of varying nationalities, such as Little Italy or Chinatown.
Old Montreal is bursting with history – old buildings, ancient artefacts and cobblestone streets – and to get a feel of the city’s past, you need to explore. In contrast, Downtown Montreal is modern, with shops and buzzing restaurants serving cuisines of all scents and tastes. Museums are in abundance and you can learn about everything from the traditional fur trade and archaeology, to creepy crawlies and even UFOs!
The outdoor cafes are a great place to enjoy a coffee in the summer and watch the world go by. At night, the clubs are open until 3am - the latest of any in the country. Alternatively, you could have a gamble at the massive Casino de Montreal.
The city does get very cold in the winter, but don’t let that deter you because there’s a vast underground infrastructure that links up restaurants, walkways, subways and shops. When you visit Montreal, don’t forget to pack your walking shoes – you’re likely to need them! Go!
Montreal Traveler Reviews
A Fun City for a Business Trip! I just went on a business trip to Montreal and aside from working, I had so much fun. It is cold in the winter, but the city is full of friendly people. The culture of Montreal is unique and not only French. It is a melting pot just like New York and Toronto. I found it was a smart idea to read a bit about the city before you go and check out some reviews online to get oriented. Check out the tourist site www.bonjourquebec.com for some valuable information. I appreciated Montreal a lot more because I read some background about Montreal's culture and history before I went. Bonjour!
