One of the most striking features about Mexico City is that it combines East and West, and old and new civilizations. When tourists stand in the center of the Zócalo, an enormous plaza in the middle of town, they can see the main cathedral, built in 1667(the first one was destroyed in 1573), with the finishing touches added in 1813.

On the east side of the square stands the Palacio Nacional, the government building, where the Mexican president and treasury have offices, and where artist Diego Rivera painted his spectacular murals depicting Mexican civilization. During the daytime, the Zócalo is busy with merchants displaying their wares, native Indian dancers, musicians, healers with their remedies, food vendors, and numerous services, beverages, and activities.

Zócalo is like a snapshot of the city, and, depending on one’s interests, Mexico City has ‘unlimited’ cathedrals, museums, theaters, health resorts, and restaurants, which all help to unfold the brilliant colors and diversity of the culture.
