Stately Melbourne, Australia’s second-largest city and the capital of Victoria, hugs Port Phillip Bay in the nation’s south-east. The city prides itself as the country’s cultural and gourmet capital, and one of the best ways to savor its multicultural mix is to visit the many ethnic food strips - head to Victoria Street in Richmond for Vietnamese food, Lygon Street in Carlton, for Italian, and to the suburb of Coburg for Greek and Turkish fare.

Board the free City Circle tourist tram for a tour of the central business district, with commentary and the ability to hop on and off to see attractions along the way. Federation Square, with its striking and controversial architecture, lies at the heart of Melbourne. As well as a thriving restaurant scene, the square is home to The Ian Potter Centre, which forms part of the National Gallery of Victoria and showcases Australian art. International art is housed in the NGV’s other site, a short distance away in St Kilda Road.

Redevelopment of the docklands area has resulted in the spectacular NewQuay precinct, a combination of high-rise apartment living and bustling harborside eateries. Victoria is the home of Australian Rules football, and during football season, attending a match at the newly renovated “MCG” is a must. (MCG stands for Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the venue also hosts football matches in season).

Other major events staged in Melbourne include the Australian Grand Prix and the Australian Open tennis championship.
