The capital of the Philippines is more than just a hub to use to explore many of the surrounding islands; it is also worth exploring itself. Manila offers a combination of its long rich history intertwined with modern life. As with any modern city, there are areas best left unexplored by the tourist, but there are plenty of attractions to keep you in the safe areas of the city. Also, as with most big cities, the city of 9.5 million, has its share of traffic and pollution issues.
For art lovers, there is the National Museum, which is also called the Museum of the Filipino Peoples. There is also the Metropolitan Museum. Both museums are dedicated to showcasing the history of the Filipinos through art and artifacts.
For those who enjoy taking in the historical architecture of a city, visiting Casa Manila is a popular attraction. This three story Spanish colonial house has been fully restored and gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the upper class in 19th century Manila. Casa Manila is part of the larger complex of Plaza San Luis which consists of several houses of different eras.
Dining options in Manila are plentiful and affordable. The average dinner for two costs about US $30. One destination for diners is Ayala Center which offers a row of restaurants. Traditional Filipino restaurants sit side by side with restaurants offering cuisines from around the world. There is also Chinatown where travelers can take their pick of Chinese restaurants.
In addition to site seeing and dining, spending time in Manila’s exciting shopping districts and partaking in the city’s vibrant nightlife can make a traveler’s journey complete without ever leaving the city.
