Madeira Overview

This tiny Portugese island, accessible only by air (apart from cruise ship visits), is blessed with great weather, yet there are strangely few beaches (and some only with black volcanic sand).

It’s often referred to as a “floating garden,” as it’s awash with horticultural delights, spurred into growth by its volcanic soil. The hilly and subtropical island offers plenty for walkers to explore.

The cathedral in the capital, Funchal, is well worth a visit, as is the Cidade do Acucar museum, which explores the sugar trade. If you visit in late February, you could get the chance to see and experience Madeira’s colourful carnival. Go!
