Macau
By Pam Bruno: Macau is the oldest European territory in China. Its tourism is based on gambling, and it has often been referred to as the Monte Carlo of the East. It even surpassed Las Vegas in revenue. Macau’s gambling center is located in Cotai, a strip of hotels and casinos along the water. The face of gambling has changed in Macau since the Sands Hotel was built in 2004, easily rivaling its sister hotel in Las Vegas.
Besides the many festivals commemorating various religious holidays, the one main event that has been held for the past 50 years in Macau is the Grand Prix. This is a 3-day event in November that brings crowds of over 20,000 to Macau, with over 300 car and motorcycle drivers. One of the drawing points is that Macau’s course is the same route that was used in the first race in 1953, still using public roads. The Macau course is considered one of the most challenging in the world. See Macau travel deals!
