Visitors to Maastrict, nestled in the southernmost corner of the Netherlands, will immediately sense an atmosphere very different to that of northern Dutch cities. Situated just a few minutes from the Belgian border, and with Germany also close by, this university town boasts a cosmopolitan chic and laid-back attitude, combined with the best cuisine in the country.

Start your visit at Helpoort, the oldest town gate in the Netherlands and follow the tourist office trail around the medieval fortifications and the attractive old quarter. Stop for a coffee or beer at a café in the Onze Lieve Vrouweplein, dominated by the Romanesque Onze Lieve Vrouwebasiliek and shaded by large trees. The other main church to see is the 1000-year-old St Servaasbasiliek.

Maastricht is renowned amongst the Dutch for its classy shops, and Stokstraat is a good place to start for those with money to burn. Meanwhile art connoisseurs will head to the Bonnefantenmuseum, on the banks of the Meuse (Maas) River, which flows through the city. The museum includes sculpture and art dating to the 14th century, as well as a collection of modern art.

Some Maastricht specialties to sample during your visit include Limburg “vlaai” (flan) Rommedou cheese, cave mushrooms and Wieckse Witte beer.
