Loch Ness Overview

By Rachel Newcombe
When Loch Ness is mentioned, it’s likely the idea of the Loch Ness monster is one of the first things to spring to mind. This isn’t surprising, as the alleged monster has been the subject of much debate over the years.
Known affectionately as Nessie, or by the scientific community as Nessiteras rhombopteryx, the history of sightings goes back a long way. It was in the year 565 AD that the very first sighting was recorded, by St. Columba. Since then, there have been regular sightings over the years and many scientific teams have engaged in attempts to prove – or disprove – its existence. The exact situation is still unclear, but for the area around Loch Ness, the possibility of a monster hidden beneath the depths of the water has proved a big point of interest for visitors.
Aside from the Nessie debate, the area around Loch Ness is picturesque, with stunning landscapes and natural beauty. The road from Inverness to the village of Drumnadrochit offers several great views of the Loch and there are set parking places along the road where you can stop and take in the scene.
In the small village of Drumnadrochit you’ll find two exhibitions devoted to the Loch Ness monster, plus numerous mentions of it in gift shops, hotels and bars. The village of Lochend is regarded as the ‘proper’ start of Loch Ness, and on the opposite shores stands Aldourie Castle, the birthplace of the historian, James Mackintosh.
As to whether the monster exists, you’ll have to go and see for yourself! Go!
