Liverpool Overview

By Rachel Newcombe
Due to be the European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool is a thriving city in the northwest of England. With heaps to see and do, it’s hard to know where to start, but here’s a rundown of some essentials to see.
An influential port in the past, the city still has a strong maritime connection today. The Albert Dock, which was opened in 1846, has undergone extensive redevelopment and has been transformed into a key heritage attraction. It now houses many bars and restaurants, plus major museums such as the Maritime Museum, Museum of Liverpool Life and Tate Liverpool.
The popular Mersey Ferry (the inspiration for the song of the same name) offers trips across the water and you can gain great views this way of the Three Graces – the Cunard Building, the Royal Liver Building and the Port of Liverpool Building. The three buildings are easily distinguishable against the city skyline.
There are also strong connections with music, not least as being the birthplace of the Beatles. For fans of the band, there are lots of Beatles related things to see and do, including The Beatles Story, a Magical Mystery Tour, the famous Cavern club and the Casbah Coffee Club.
If you enjoy shopping, the Met Quarter shopping district is packed with top designer shops, including the only MAC store out of London, and Cavern Walks features stores by independent designers. When you’re all shopped out, head for some fresh air and great walks at the Wirral County Park. Go!
