Located in County Limerick and the province of Munster, the city of Limerick is the fourth largest city in the Republic of Ireland (after Dublin, Cork and Galway). The mouth of the river Shannon is here and, in the right place, you can get a great view of the river and Lough Gur.

A medieval city with a rich past, you’ll find plenty of relics from its heritage and history here. The Viking settlement of King John’s Castle, built between the 12th and 16th centuries, is a popular attraction and the walls, towers and fortifications remain visible to explore and see. St. Mary’s cathedral has had a long history, having being founded in 1168 on a palace donated to the city of the King of Munster.

As you explore, look out for the Treaty Stone, which is where the treaty ending the siege of 1691 is believed to have been signed. It’s also a young and vibrant place, playing a key role in education and has a highly regarded university and technology institute. For shopping fans, there’s a good range of shops – both local and the usual high street names – and you can be sure of finding a good restaurant to eat in. Explorations can be done by foot or bus, but if you’re feeling in need of refreshment, you can’t beat a quick glass of the country’s favourite tipple!

The surrounding County Limerick has a varied landscape, with lowlands in the east, but mountains in the south east – a classic example of the varied scenery to be found on the Emerald Isle.
