By Lynne Christen: Since biblical times, the area that is now Jordan withstood invasions and conflicts and emerged as a leader in the Middle East. Following WWI, Jordan was separated from the Palestine mandate and placed under the rule of King Abdullah Hussein. Following his death in 1999, King Abdullah II has continued his father’s focus on reform, foreign relations and tourism. Among a myriad of must-sees, two stand out. The Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth, is a land-locked sea with ten times normal sea water salt levels and a host of minerals. Visitors float effortlessly in the briny waters and roll in mineral rich mud claimed to have restorative benefits. Petra is another Jordanian treasure. Navigate the narrow Siq Gorge passageway that ends at the elaborately carved rose-red Treasury. (Movie fans will recognize scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). Go at dawn or sunset when the light is the most amazing. It is a travel moment that will linger forever in the heart and soul. Go! |
