Asia Based Discount Carrier
JetLite (touchy-feely slogan, “Emotionally Yours”) was formed by Jet Airways to start low-cost Indian domestic routes. It operates 737s and Regional Jets to almost 30 destinations. Major cities like New Delhi and Mumbai have frequent services, but JetLite strays off the beaten track too. Both locals and travellers have access to lesser-known areas of India, as well as Nepal, Sri Lanka and the Emerald Isles.
Like many discount carriers, fares are as little as US$1 but final cost (after $40 fuel surcharge and $5 service charge, for example) depends on route and timing. There is a 25kg baggage allowance included, but check aircraft type carefully. Although 7kg is the carry-on maximum, the RJ’s small cabin restricts dimensions to that of a laptop bag!
The in-flight menu is adequate and cheap, with Snickers worryingly described as ‘non-vegetarian’. Most bizarre, though, is ShopLite – an onboard auction where passengers bid for catalogue items and the best two win. Search!
