Tokyo, the capital of Japan, and the worlds largest city with 34 million people, is a must visit along with Kyoto, Kobe, Kamakura and Nikko. My visit to Tokyo left me dizzy with visions of hyper-hygiene, Hello Kitty, ultramodern designs, ancient pagodas, cool gadgets and miniature hotel rooms.

Tokyo has the reputation as one the most expensive cities to visit, however if you play your chips right it can be cheaper then some of the popular European cities. Tips to save money in Tokyo include, using the excellent subway system instead of taxis, eating at the smaller, local restaurants and staying in hostels instead of hotels. Airfare to Tokyo is typically cheaper in the spring and fall.

The people, and even police officers, of Tokyo are friendly and helpful to tourists. The citizens aren’t particularly outgoing, but nice and engaging when you request assistance or initiate a conversation. Speaking of “speaking”, try to learn 10-20 Japanese phrases before you go there. They will go a long way in Japan and give you something to do on the long plane ride there.
