Jakarta, established in the fourteenth century as a trading harbor for the spice trade, developed into a large port. Colonized by the Dutch in 1618, independence was granted in 1945.

Explore the historic Sunda Kelapa Harbor area to see old-fashioned wooden schooners; a nineteenth century Dutch lookout tower; and Museum Bahari, once a warehouse and now a maritime museum.

At the heart of Kota Old Town, built by the Dutch in the 1620s, is Taman Fatahillah, the town square, where three colonial buildings now house museums. Go!
