Italy

By iCheapAirfares Staff: As I bargained with the boat driver about prices for a tour around Lago Di Como, I thought to myself, “I’ll just pay his steep price before our negotiations get to intense”. After all, this is the same lake that has inspired distinguished writers, poets and musicians from the Roman times up to present day, so I didn’t want an unharmonious outing. In the middle of our tour I asked myself, “What place in Italy hasn’t inspired numerous artists for the last 2,500 years?” That was last time I used that rationale to justify overpaying for something on our trip.

The drive in our rental car around Lago di Como, located an hour north of Milan (in northern Italy), was equally impressive. With the snow-capped Alps in the background, we passed clusters of terracotta-roof villas, split by narrow, steep alleyways leading down to the river. The town of Como featured an awesome Gothic and Renaissance style Duomo crested by a beautiful baroque dome.

Also, nestled along Lago Di Como was the town of Cernobbio, a resort town once frequented by English nobility, Bellagio, another charming resort town at the point where the lake forks, and Varrena, which is overlooked by the ruins of an 11th century castle.

On your next trip to Italy, in addition to planning a visit to Rome’s ruins, Venice’s canals, Florence’s museums and Tuscany’s vineyards, try to schedule in an atypical daytrip, like Lago Di Como, to balance out your itinerary. See Italy travel deals!

Paese Favoloso!
Maybe it’s because my family comes from Italy, or maybe it’s just because it is such a country favoloso, but I have always loved Italy. My heart thrills when I’m in Florence or Rome, and see the statues on every street corner, the multitude of fountains, not to mention the emotions that well up when I stand before the greatness of Michelangelo’s works, the Pieta, the David, the Prisoners in stone, and, of course, the Sistine Chapel. I love the sense of history that lives and breathes in every work of art, such as the portraits and sculptures commissioned for the Medici family, Michelangelo’s primary sponsors. It is such an inspiration to see the great accomplishments of those artists who lived in the country of my ancestors. Maybe some of that will rub off on me!
