Once the capital of Vietnam, Hue was founded by the Nguyen Dynasty on the banks of the pleasant sounding Perfume River. For the inquisitive traveller, Hue is easy to get around on foot or by bike and has distinctive older areas, such as the fortified citadel, and newer, more developed parts, which are home to the many hotels, shops and restaurants. It’s the older elements that will probably be of more interest. The citadel and Forbidden City – based on the original in Beijing – overlook the Perfume River and feature the oldest pagoda in Hue, plus three temples and a tower.

You’ll also find the Tombs of the Emperors alongside the river. Dating from the late 19th century, the tombs provide impressive examples of the stunning tombs built and designed for emperors. Either walk around exploring the tombs on your own, or join one of the guided tour groups which run regularly during peak times.
