Larger airlines abandoned service to small Pacific Northwest cities after the Airline Deregulation Act of 1978. Entrepreneur Milt Kuolt saw a business opportunity and launched daily service between Yakima, Pasco and Seattle, Washington in two Fairchild F-27 turboprops. Although purchased by Alaska Air Group in 1986, Horizon still prides itself on its family-like work environment and its core values of integrity, heart, partnership, innovation and continuous improvement.

Horizon cuts operating costs by sharing some departments and services with sister airline Alaska Air. It is in the process of transitioning from three different aircraft types to only the Bombardier Q400. The 76-passenger turboprop sips fuel as it zips to popular business and vacation destinations (Glacier National Park in Montana, worldly Vancouver, B.C., and Mammoth Lakes, California) as well as weekend getaways (Santa Rosa wine country in California; Bellingham, Washington, a stepping-off point to the San Juan islands;and British Columbia's capital city of Victoria).
