Built on a peninsula surrounded by the Baltic Sea, Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is a relatively young city, established in 1550.

The cobbled Senate Square (Senaatintori) is edged with imposing nineteenth century buildings, including the Government Palace, the National Library of Finland, Helsinki University and the Cathedral, as well as Sederholm House, the oldest stone building in the city. The square is the center of festivities on such occasions as May Day and Independence Day in December.

Take a ferry to Suomenlinna Island and explore the large maritime fortress there, built in the eighteenth century to protect the city.
